The exhibition "White Shadows: Anneliese Hager and the Camera-less Photograph" explores the work of German artist Anneliese Hager (1904–1997) and her preferred technique: the photogram, or camera-less photograph. It also highlights women artists maligned in photographic histories that privilege “masterworks” by predominantly male makers.
This brief film introduces one such artist: Bertha Günther who lived and worked at the Loheland Colony near Fulda – 100 miles from the Bauhaus school of art and design in Weimar, Germany. Also founded in 1919, Loheland was a school for women by women, and it was there in the early 1920s that Bauhaus artist László Moholy-Nagy encountered Günther’s photograms and then began to make his own. Although her work provided a key link between the botanical contact prints of the nineteenth century and the twentieth century avant-garde, Günther would remain unnamed – and unknown – for decades to come. Moholy-Nagy’s photograms and writing on the subject would in turn inspire that of Anneliese Hager.
The exhibition is on view March 4, 2022–July 31, 2022 in the Special Exhibition galleries of the Harvard Art Museums.
