Simple Driveway Repair with water by Quick Patch at Home Depot
Hey bought this product called quick patch and it’s designed to fill holes in your asphalt driveway without the need for a heat gun or fire or the pounding down of a cold patch. You just mix it with water
I think it’s a 3 1/2 gallon can. And the asphalt pellets come inside a plastic bag. You’re gonna’ need to cut the wire tie that’s around it. I used a rake to remove the loose and crumbled debris inside of the hole. Also you want to make sure that you do not mix anything with the moss that surrounds the outside the hole as well. I wasn’t able to hold my camera phone and dump the product out so here I am just pushing it down lightly with my foot. Let’s get a shovel and level it out. So I leveled it off with the rake and now I’m kind of stomping on it to even it out. You could use a pound or a and kind of tamp it in. You could get a 2 x 4 and a sledgehammer and kind of bang down on it.
In a couple minutes I’m gonna add some water. It’s late text-based and it really hardens well.
It adheres really well and filled the hole just as good as, if not better than, a hot seal patch
Let’s read the label and see what it says. Quick patch H2O, meaning that it’s water-based is a black permanent patch for asphalt and may be used on potholes, depressions, driveways, sidewalks, parking lots etc. It even works on concrete it’s stronger than conventional patches and can be applied in any weather condition. Do not put it down during the freezing rain. And I would hope that when you make this repair that the temperature is at least above 40°. It just makes sense that once you add water, you don’t want it to freeze and not bond to itself properly. It fully dries within 24 hours but I’ll be honest with you guys, this sets up pretty hard even after a few hours.
There’s been great advances in latex technology. And because this product is water-based, it activates and seals itself when you add H2O. Certainly don’t over wet it. We have to use common sense right? OK it’s not gonna freeze tonight so I’m safe. And I’m going to leave this stick and rubber trowel on top of the bucket over top of my repair so when someone drives in my driveway, they won’t run over the patch.
So before I attempt to fill in this area with the patch material, I want to make sure that the sand and dirt and small rocks that’s in this trench, is leveled off evenly, not too deep, and certainly not too shallow.
It’s a good idea to have a wide shovel and a broom handy so you can sweep up excess dirt and rocks to prevent it getting inside the mix.
It may be hard to tell from this vantage point with my iPhone camera, but I’m making sure that the hole that I’m filling is at least 2 1/2 to 3 inches deep, and by walking along the trench, inside of it, I won’t overfill or under fill with the product
So here’s one of two, 3 1/2 pound cans that I will need for this project.
This plastic bucket is sealed really well, you’re gonna need some type of pliers to get it open and pull off the surrounding plastic strip band.
And you can see in the lower third of this frame,
I have poured some of the asphalt patch mix from the container into the ditch already.
These black pellets inside the plastic bag are sealed with a wire tie, so you’re gonna need some type of wire cutter to break the wire tie, So you can dump the stuff out.
And now I’m using a shovel to level it off, and kind of rake it in, helping it seat properly.
I thought the use of a little plastic hammer would help pack it in, but it didn’t really pack it firm enough.
Instead, let’s get a piece of 2 x 4 and a sledgehammer and help pack it down, 12 inches at a time
So after leveling it off, and firmly pounding it down, but not too hard, I still need to top off the repaired area with another layer of the water based asphalt patch mix.
