Research shows that prenatal breastfeeding classes can have many positive effects on breastfeeding outcomes:
Breastfeeding initiation: Prenatal education can increase the likelihood of initiating breastfeeding. Many people think they will get this education after birth while they’re in the hospital; but there isn’t time, your brain won’t be able to absorb that information post delivery, and many hospitals are short staffed on lactation help. I typically recommend a prenatal consultation between 34-38 weeks (although I’ve now had two women in early labor take the class around 40 weeks!!)
Breastfeeding duration: Those who receive prenatal education tend to breastfeed longer.
Breastfeeding exclusivity: Prenatal education can increase the duration of exclusive breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding knowledge: Prenatal education can increase women’s knowledge of breastfeeding.
Positive attitude: Prenatal education can increase a family’s positive attitude towards breastfeeding.
Self-efficacy: Prenatal education can increase women’s self-efficacy in breastfeeding.
Latch skills: Prenatal education can help mothers master breastfeeding latch skills.
Nipple damage: Prenatal education can reduce the risk of nipple damage, especially because they are already connected to a lactation consultant who can help figure out why there is damage in a more timely manner
