A few months ago it was incredible to think that Nicolas Maduro's regime would allow an election, as Venezuela has not seen a free and fair election since 2013, when Maduro won by a narrow margin against opposition candidate Henrique Capriles. Maduro was re-elected in 2018 in an election that is considered a sham, with record abstention and multiple claims of fraud. So the mere fact that several opposition candidates may run is significant. No one knows with full certainty what will happen on July 28, election day. Nor if the results will be accepted. What is certain is that, given the current conditions, there is a real possibility that Maduro will lose the elections. First, because the regime did not expect the opposition to be so united despite the constant attacks and harassment by the government. And second, because Chavismo did not expect such a massive support from Venezuelans for an opposition candidate. People feel again that there is an opportunity to get the country out of the economic decline it has been suffering for more than a decade. The response of Venezuelans is so overwhelming that, according to a study by the pollster Delphos and the Andres Bello University, published in mid July, Edmundo Gonzalez, the opposition candidate has a 59.1% voting intention against Nicolas Maduro's 24.16%. And for now, the pollsters of trajectory and with recognition in the country give Edmundo Gonzalez as the winner. However, we are talking about the Venezuelan regime. So, the first question is: why won't it be possible to have fair and free elections in Venezuela?
