Visible thinking practice has gained popularity in recent years as a valuable classroom tool for maximizing student engagement, promoting critical thinking, and increasing collaboration. Developed by Project Zero at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, these highly flexible conceptual protocols often require little teacher preparation while yielding rich learning opportunities across age groups. Typically presented as simple sets of questions or prompts, these routines provide a context for students to effectively process new concepts, make connections, and extend their learning. They provide a productive framework for students to record their questions, opinions, and conclusions in a systematic way.

This session will introduce several visible thinking routines that can enrich communicative dynamics, stimulate productive engagement, and foster insightful expression–a valuable addition to any language teacher’s instructional tool box!
