On March 22nd, we presented key insights from the extensive study carried out by the partners of the Digital Inter/Section EU project on existing ecosystems and business models in the digital art sector: the publication gathered insights and recommendations from 25 countries worldwide on how to shape new business models. We also talked about the next steps: launching a new, European Agency to promote Digital Art.
Digital Inter/Section (DI/S) is a multi-year initiative of Chroniques (France), Chromatic (Canada), KIKK (Belgium), Kontejner (Croatia), Signal (Czech Republic), and THE CATALYSTS (Germany). The DI/S project aimed at diversifying the sources of income and business models for digital arts & culture organizations, while promoting sustainable, ethical, and inclusive economic development.
In the first part of the presentation, THE CATALYSTS, who led the research from 2022 to 2023, presented the results. Based on a comprehensive survey, micro-case studies, and expert interviews, we investigated the monetization trends that kept the art world excited. How did they finance themselves? What were the business models they used? We talked about numbers, but also about the fears and hopes for the future of the digital arts sector. Spoiler alert: the key finding was collaboration!

In a second part, representatives of the KIKK festival - one of the leading digital art events in Europe - shared from a practical perspective how they operated themselves, while looking at new, sustainable business models. They talked about their success factors, but also the pitfalls of opening a permanent art space. What did they learn in the process? What were the new opportunities they were working on currently?
In the last part, we presented the collaborative project we were currently putting in place within the consortium. Based on the research results, the partners decided to develop and test a new business model to increase their economic resilience: we were putting together a new, European agency for digital art. Join us to be the first ones to hear about that!
Digital Inter/Section (DI/S) was a project co-funded by the European Commission within the framework of the Creative Europe program.
