Reports of children sexually assaulting other children are on the rise in the UK, with a 71% increase in reported sexual offences over the past four years. There are believed to be around 200,000 cases of child sexual abuse each year, with around a third carried out by children. The majority of victims are girls. Children are increasingly living their lives online, with unsupervised access to inappropriate content, including pornography, dating sites and social media. Sexting is also becoming more widespread, with teenagers often feeling pressured to share intimate photos to demonstrate their feelings for a partner. Teachers argue that it has become normalised for teenagers to share explicit images. The UK government is pushing for greater education around consent and respect for others in relationships. However, some activists are critical of this approach, arguing that it places the onus on victims to prevent sexual abuse rather than tackling the root causes of the problem.
