If you ever receive InDesign documents from other InDesign users you may have received a font error message when you open up the file. What should you do?
Well, don't ignore this message, as it can lead to all sorts of issues if you don't correct the problem. How you address the issue depends on the font that has gone missing. You will need to either sync with Typekit, install the missing font or replace the font with a font on your system.
1. Syncing Typekit Fonts: If you are using Adobe Creative Cloud you will have access to a number of fonts as part of your subscription. Go to Type_Add Fonts from Typekit and search for the font you need for your document. When you find it hit the sync or download button to resolve the issue.
2. Installing Fonts: If you have been emailed or downloaded the font you need to install the font on your system. Once installed, InDesign will recognise the new font and automatically resolve the issue. You can install most fonts in Windows by right clicking the font file and choosing install. On a Mac you can manually copy the font to your fonts folder via User_Library_Fonts. However it is preferred to use Font Book or another font management application. You can easily activate and deactivate fonts using Font Book.
3. Replacing Fonts: If you simply don't have the font, and can't acquire it, you will need to replace it with a font you do have. The short video below explains how you can quickly replace missing fonts in InDesign with your own system fonts. Be careful to check all text frames after doing this, as the text will know doubt move position when formatted with a new font. You don't want overset text if the replacement font is slightly larger than the missing font.
