In this video, I restored an old fire ax. I think the ax was made in Slovenia, at least somewhere I came across some such information: /
If anyone has any information let them write in the comment so I will add in the description.
As for the condition of the ax, it can be seen that it stood in a damp place for many years
and that the corrosion has spread nicely, in some places up to 1mm in the material. The leather case is astonishingly in good condition and as far as it was concerned it was easy enough to wash and oil it.
There were missing wedges, pins that serve to secure the ax, as well as to protect the handle from damage that may occur during use. I made them according to the measurements and appearance that I determined. In the original, it was thinner sheets that were fastened with a screw to the handle of the ax.
The handle of the ax in the original is of a slightly different shape. It is thinner, shorter and in my opinion not ergonomic. To make the handle, I used part of the old handle, which has been in the soup for ten years. I think it's acacia.
When grinding the ax, I was careful not to overheat the steel, because in that case there is a loosening, softening of the material and then re-hardening would be necessary, this way I managed to avoid it.
As for sanding and polishing, I used water sandpaper in granulations from 120 to 3000 and then polished it further. I coated the wood with one of my combinations of linseed oil and beeswax, in a ratio of 1 to 5 in favor of linseed oil.

The camera I use is a Canon M50
