The Astronomy Society of Fulton Science Academy (ASFSA) launched the KORUCU-22 project on August 12, 2022.
The Astronomy Society released a high-altitude weather balloon (HAB) to attain a height of 31.5 km (19.5 mi) above the surface, a region of the atmosphere called the stratosphere or near-space. For reference, most commercial airplanes only fly to an altitude of 13 km (8 mi).
The KORUCU-22 is the first of a series of HAB releases planned by the ASFSA, with the ultimate goal of collecting data for a research experiment in near-space. Ideas include sending live bacteria or reactive chemicals for scientific experimental purposes to face the extremities of such a flight. In the future, ASFSA plans to advance in developing and sending a mini-satellite to space on its mission to explore the night sky through NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative. The Initiative provides (competitive) low-cost access to space for U.S. educational institutions with the aim “to inspire and develop the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technologists by offering a unique opportunity to conduct scientific research and develop/demonstrate novel technologies in space.”
This project is named the KORUCU-22 in honor of the late school board president Mr. Ayhan Korucu who passed away recently. Mr. Korucu extended his generosity and vocalized his support for ASFSA’s mission and activities.
The balloon carried a bundle of equipment, including high-quality cameras to capture images of the Earth’s curvature. Also included were sensors that track changes in temperature, pressure, altitude, and other atmospheric measurements.
ASFSA invited its current and prospective members to join us and watch as they released the HAB from the FSA backyard this afternoon. This was also an opportunity for our prospective members to learn more about ASFSA’s missions and projects. The event was open to everyone to attend.
