Red Flag Laws, first introduced in 1998 after a rampage shooting in Connecticut, have now been implemented in nineteen states. This form of gun control allows family members, police, and even doctors to petition the court for the removal of firearms from a person who they believe is a danger to themselves or others.
Dr. Kate Termini is a Forensic Psychologist with a specialization in Neuropsychology. In her work, Dr. Termini works with different parties to assess individuals who have been “flagged” under New York State’s laws.
In this film, Dr. Termini discusses the role that mental health professionals play when it comes to Red Flag Laws: from threat assessments, to intervention options, to the ways high risk individuals can be helped before it’s too late. Lastly, she explains the steps we can all take to understand and promote red flag laws…and do our small parts to end the tragic scourge of school shootings ravaging the USA.
