What was once the biggest superpower of the ancient world is only a memory of a distant empire today. We're talking about the Roman empire, those who managed to conquer the Greeks and a big part of Europe during their height, but as with many great civilizations, also ended up falling. How did this happen?
At its height, Rome encompassed most of Continental Europe, Britain, northern Africa, the Mediterranean Islands, and even western Asia. Legend has it that Rome was founded in 753 B.C by Romulus and Remus, the twin sons of Mars, the god of war.
During the early Republic, though the Gauls sacked and burned Rome back in 390 B.C, the Romans eventually rebounded under the leadership of the military hero Camillus and managed to regain control of the entire Italian peninsula once more by 264 B.C. Rome also had to fight some of the bloodiest wars in ancient history: the Punic Wars, with Carthage. It took the Romans roughly 450 years as a republic to then become an Empire, after the rise of Julius Caesar. It was under Emperor Augustus that Rome began to prosper once more. It was under Antoninus Pius that Rome continued its peaceful tenure and prosperity, though the reign of Marcus Aurelius was mostly dominated by conflict, including wars against Armenia and Pathia, on top of the invasion of the Germanic tribes from the north. Emperor Diocletian, from 284 to 305, restored peace to Rome but at the cost of unity of the Empire. He had divided Rome's power in a tetrarchy, sharing his title of Augustus with Maximian. Constantine, the son of Constantius, emerged from the power struggles that ensued as the only emperor of the unified Rome in 324 but only 30 years after Constantine's death, the eastern and western roman empires were once again divided.
Rome fell on itself because it was so huge that it didn't actually have the resources to centralize itself. It eventually lost its provinces one by one, losing Britain, Spain, and Africa by 430. The Huns invaded Gaul and Italy in 450, and a Germanic prince by the name of Odovacar took control of the Roman army in Italy, eventually deposing Romulus Augustus, the last western emperor. Finally, Rome fell.
