Almost 20 years ago, Pokémon ex made their debut in EX Ruby & Sapphire and have been a staple in the Pokémon TCG until EX Power Keepers in 2007. They have now made a comeback in Scarlet & Violet, and though they may have a different appearance, they still retain the original mechanic's essence - being powerful two-Prize Pokémon that can evolve from one-Prize Pokémon. Although Pokémon ex may resemble the more recent Pokémon-EX from the Black & White Series and the XY Series, the main difference is that Pokémon-EX were typically Basic Pokémon, whereas Pokémon ex can appear at any Evolution stage.
Pokémon ex are not only strong, but they also offer flexibility in gameplay. They can evolve from Pokémon that only give up one Prize card, which adds another layer to deck building and strategy. For instance, if you require high HP and raw power, you can choose to evolve Lechonk into Oinkologne ex. Alternatively, if you want to avoid giving up more than one Prize card, you can still evolve Lechonk into Oinkologne.
In the Paldea region, there is a special occurrence called the Terastal phenomenon. This causes Pokémon to have a shiny, crystal appearance and a decorative jewel on their heads, which makes them stronger during battles. In the Pokémon TCG, Tera Pokémon also have this jewel, which boosts their determination and protects them from damage while they are not actively participating in the battle.
