A video by NAO president, Dr Shawn Pourgol, MBA, DC, DO, DN, PhD:

Manual osteopaths can legally work in 50 states of the United States of America.

In a few states such as California they can work without any specific license as long as they get their clients sign a special consent form indicating that the client knows the osteopathic manual practitioner is not a doctor, does not provide medical, chiropractic or physiotherapy care and that the OMP does not take or read x-rays.

In other states where a license is required, OMPs can join the American Association of Natural Wellness Practitioners (AANWP) to get a special license to practice as a wellness practitioner with the ability to provide manual osteopathic care under this license.

Dr Pourgol is on the executive board of this association in charge of accrediting osteopathy and naprapathy programs and he generally approves any osteopathic educational program that provides over 2000 hours of education. National Academy of Osteopathy is accredited by AANWP.

Currently about 2000 osteopathic manual practitioners practice in the United States.
