In this video, I demonstrate techniques for getting started with your portrait large or small. These techniques are beginner-friendly; underpainting the canvas, selecting your reference image, color, and values and tips for mixing realistic skin tones.
Along with the demo there is a timelapse video showing the entire process involved with creating my latest oil painting “Siena's Gaze.” The piece was inspired by a photo of my daughter. This video takes you from start to finish so you can see everything from the scrap canvas through the painterly and abstract background all the way to the completed work. The work is fairly expressionistic and painterly, with lots of layers and glazing and pulling out the details.
