So if you're just starting out, and you're anything like I was I was avoiding the tone curve at all costs. Hey, my name is Dean Tucker and today I'm going to be teaching you what the F a tone curve is.

I know it's scary at first but I promise you that once you fully understand the Tone Curve you'll be able to take your editing to the next level!

So what exactly is a tone curve?

Simply put, a tone curve is the most powerful and effective tool for adjusting the brightness, darkness contrast and color balance of your image. So first things first, there are two types of tone curves.

1. Region curve.

This is pretty much a tone curve with training wheels. It's for the beginnings being much smoother and easier to use. That being said, it's hard to customise your shots and really get that vsco. At a first glance the tone curve is set up in a line graph diagram with the shadows, darks, Lights and highlights on the x axis and the brightness percentage on the y axis.

So putting those fancy words to use, if you drag the shadow section down the shadows will get darker. Alternatively, if you drag the highlights section up your highlights will get brighter. And by doing so you've just created your first S curve, therefore adding contrast to shots.

2. Point curve

You can now add multiple points of the curve yourself. This makes it easier to create more drastic effects. You can also use the targeted adjustments or to make specific changes to an area with the same light value. And if you're looking to bring up the Fade and join the Instagram trends just slide up the point at the tail end of the curves your desired fade. You can also do this with the highlights.

Moving on you will see an option to change the color channel of your tone curve. These other RBG channels and only affect the curves of an individual color. For example, if you pull the greens up, you will add more greens your image. And if you pull it down, you will add the opposite color green which is magenta. You can be more specific to the highlights and the shadows with this and create really unique looks. These combinations create some of the incredible styles and colors that you see from your favorite photographers, and this is why they are so difficult to replicate.

I hope this video is helpful and you guys now know what the F a tone curve is. If you liked this video and you'd like to see more please give it a big thumbs up and subscribe to the channel for more episodes every single week.
