Work smarter not harder is a classic motivational phrase that can certainly be applied to many aspects of guitar study - including lead guitar!
Playing a great guitar solo not only involves building scale and note technique on the neck - it also involves a mindset that helps you to visualize the best note patterns. This lesson is going to show you one of the greatest principles that you can apply to your soloing workouts for visualizing excellent note patterns.
In this lesson we’re going to examine a chord template approach that offers up the best note choices for each chord in a solo’s backing progression. It works by targeting chords played in the backing track since they already include the most effective notes with the best connection to each chord of your progression.
We’ll start by establishing a chord progression for our backing track that is based upon the popular “triad” chord. Then, we will enhance the chords with a seventh degree. Finally, we will work to create simple templates that zero in on the chord tones thus providing us with the very best note choices for a solo.
