One thing missed in the video: You can only summon people when you have not cleared the boss in the area. Then you can summon at any point within the area except in the boss room itself. (Recommended to summon right before the boss gate)
This is why summoning randoms didn't work for me in the video. The tree Sentinel was killed in that area.
