Every 5 minutes, someone in India is diagnosed with blood cancer (such as leukemia, lymphoma, or
myeloma) or a blood disorder (such as thalassemia or aplastic anemia). India ranks third highest in reported
cases of hematological cancers in the world and remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related death
among children.
As per the Globocan 2020 reports, every year, over 70 thousand people die of blood cancer, and over 1 lakh
people are diagnosed with a form of blood cancer or blood disorders in India. Many patients are children and
young people whose only chance of recovery is a stem cell transplant, for which they need healthy blood
stem cells donated from a matching donor. But here’s the catch - finding the match is often a one-in-a-million
chance!
It is especially challenging because the tissue characteristics of the patient and the donor must match.
Ethnicity plays a key role in finding the perfect match. Patients and donors of Indian origin have unique
tissue characteristics severely under-represented in the global database, making the probability of finding a
suitable donor even more difficult.
As only 0.04% of the Indian population is registered as potential donors, it is extremely difficult for Indian
patients to find a matching unrelated donor. This situation can only be changed by recruiting many potential
stem cell donors from India.
DKMS BMST Foundation India is dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders. Our
mission is to give as many blood cancer and blood disorder patients as possible a second chance at life. To
make this happen, we raise awareness, recruit potential blood stem cell donors to provide a second chance
at life, raise funds to match donor registration costs, and improve blood cancer therapies through our
research. Thus, we strive for a future with more blood cancer and blood disorder survivors.
