The phenomenon of johatsu gained prominence after financial crises in Japan, particularly in 1989 and 2008. Despite the lack of official statistics, estimates suggest a significant number of johatsu cases each year, with some sources estimating up to 100,000 disappearances annually. The story sheds light on the complex societal pressures and personal struggles that lead individuals to choose this drastic path in Japan.
