The year three hundred eighty seven B.C. Plato, a student of Socrates, founds a school of philosophy, or academy, in Athens. He tries to create a philosophical system that embraces the world, in which ideas have an important place. He describes a future country that should be led by philosophers. The Gauls capture the city of Rome and demand a large amount of gold as a ransom. After the Gauls leave, the Roman city is surrounded by a wall. The city will not be conquered by a foreign enemy for the next eight hundred years.
