An introduction to 3D fractals, and a piece of software to explore them. Amazingly exotic fractal spaces can be explored using this easy software. I explain how to do it, and why it is worth while.
Computer graphics revolutionized mathematics by revealing systems of extraordinary beauty and complexity (i.e., fractal geometry, chaos theory, cellular automata etc.). But its only recently that computers are becoming powerful enough for us to really experience moving around the extraordinary kinds of colored 3D landscapes that fractal geometry naturally provides.
The mandelbulb software enables such exploration. I do a demo, and a short tutorial about how to get up and running with this fascinating tool.
Check out fractal forum to see the immense range of different styled forms that can arise by iterating these simple rules.
