ইউক্রেন ইউরোপ মহাদেশের সবচেয়ে দরিদ্র দেশ। তবে আর্থিকভাবে দরিদ্র দেশটি ইতিহাস ও ঐতিহ্যে বড়ই সমৃদ্ধ। কৃষি ও খনিজ সম্পদে ভরপুর ইউক্রেনকে একসময় সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের ‘রুটির ঝুড়ি’ বলা হতো। সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়ন ভেঙ্গে যাওয়ার পর দেশটির অর্থনীতি অনেক বড় এক ধাক্কা খায়। তবে বর্তমানে দেশটির শিল্প খাতের অভাবনীয় অগ্রগতি পুরো ইউরোপে এক নজীরবিহীন দৃষ্টান্ত সৃষ্টি করেছে। একইসাথে এটি ইউরোপের অন্যতম পর্যটন কেন্দ্র। ওয়ার্ল্ড ট্যুরিজম অর্গানাইজেশনের র্যাঙ্কিং অনুসারে, ২০০৭ সালে ইউরোপে ৮ম স্থান অর্জন করেছিলো ইউক্রেন।
