In a series circuit, the total resistance is simply the sum of the individual resistances and with each resistor that's added in series, the total resistance increases.
The series resistor equation is: RT = R1 + R2 + R3
In a parallel circuit, the total resistance is slightly more complicated. The more resistors that are added in parallel, the total resistance of the circuit decreases. The inverse of the total resistance is equal to the sum of the inverses of the other resistances.
The parallel resistor equation is: 1/RT = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + 1/R3
