The new Fujifilm GFX100 II is the best digital medium format camera that Fujifilm has made thus far, but is it for you? It really does depend on what you currently have. If you're already in the GFX ecosystem, it's a natural upgrade. It's the fastest GFX camera, it has the latest sensor and processor, the newest film simulation (Reala ACE), and the most modular since the original GFX50S. Even the price of $7500 USD is $2500 cheaper than the original GFX100. What's not to like right? Well, if you currently own the original GFX100, how much will you get on a trade-in, or if you try to sell yourself on eBay or FB Marketplace? You will be lucky to get half of what you paid. Now, as a professional, or someone with extra cash, maybe it's not a big deal. But for the rest of us, that's a big financial hit.
For me, I love the overall performance and image quality of the new GFX100 II; but the previous GFX100 and GFX100S also produce high quality, high resolution images. If you need the speed and modularity of the latest and greatest, it makes sense to get the new GFX100 II. If you're looking for a deal, look for pre-owned GFX100 and GFX100S. I'm sure there are bargains to be found.
As for the new GF55mm f/1.7 R WR, it's a great focal length as a general-purpose lens. It's halfway between the GF45 and GF63, so this can be your one prime lens, albeit big and heavy. The optical performance is top-notch, and an option to the GF80mm f/1.7 R WR. The shallow depth of field and compression will be higher on the GF80mm, but the GF55mm allows you to work closer with your subject, while still being able to use it as a standard-wide lens for most situations. Stay tuned for my Fujilove articles with more images and comparisons.
