The final phase of environmental cleanup is underway at the former Norwich Hospital property in Preston. All but five of the 56 buildings on the property have been demolished. The historic Administration Building received a historic preservation grant in the hopes of saving it. The town of Preston took ownership of the abandoned property from the state in 2009, secured over $30 million in cleanup grants and loans and marketed it as Preston Riverwalk. The Mohegan tribe reached an agreement in spring of 2017 to take ownership once cleanup is complete. The revised development agreement calls for the town to convey the property by January 2025. The final cleanup is scheduled to be done by May 1, 2024.
