Historic Milepost from FEC Overseas Railway
We all know about the FEC Overseas Railway that went into the Florida Keys and Key West whose first passenger train arrived in 1912 and operations went on until 1935 when the Labor Day Hurricane destroyed the tracks and washed away most of all the infrastructure. At that point, the former ROW was turned into US 1 and FL City became the Southern Terminus for the FEC line just South of Homestead and at the tip of mainland FL and the continental United States of America. It went from passenger service to freight service hauling produce mostly. Toward the end of the line there was a spur that branched off the main around Naranja that serviced Homestead Air Force Base located at SW 288th Street in Homestead, FL. Military trains were a common site here during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 when Fidel Castro was hiding missiles from the USSR in Cuba and the world was on the brink of nuclear war! Despite all this history FEC decided to sell part of the Miami Extension to the city for an elevated rail system aka Metrorail in 1984 and the rest of the line in 1988 to make a busway which in my opinion displayed lack of vision because today it would've been prime real estate for Brightline trains. The railroad crossing at SW 137th Ave had two small WRRS cantilevers with signals but I don't remember crossing gates but it could've had them. The final traces of the Air Force base spur were removed around 2017 and now it is but a distant memory. FEC even had a connection with the CSX Homestead Subdivision formerly Seaboard Air line tracks built in 1926.
