Cruise costs are usually advertised as per person, per trip. However, read the fine print. Once you select a cabin and go to checkout, you will notice additional Port Charges and Taxes added to each individual's price. These cruise add-ons can cost anywhere from $75 to $250 more per person, depending on the length of the cruise and ports of call.
Other additional cruise costs the cruise lines don’t tell you about are the daily gratuities. Almost all cruise lines charge passengers a flat fee, around $12-$18, per day, to cover tips for the hardworking crew. These costs are split among staff in the dining room, your stateroom attendant, and more.
There are even more hidden costs of cruising when you purchase items on a cruise. Whether it is a spa treatment, alcoholic beverage, or specialty dinner, the cruise lines will charge you a service charge. This hidden cost of cruising is an extra 15-20% of the cost. Even some cruise planner items, such as drink packages, will also charge you this additional cruise cost.
While many things onboard the ship are included, there are additional activities that cruise lines will charge you for during your trip. Fitness classes, mixology seminars, some entertainment, and other activities like go-karts and laser tag will cost you additional money on a cruise.
Plus, most modern cruise ships now offer up-charge dining venues. These specialty restaurants are in addition to the complimentary venues which often include the buffet, main dining room, and other casual spots.
Other additional cruise costs include WiFi. Like many luxury hotels, internet access is not included in your cruise fare for many contemporary cruise lines. Cruise lines also charge extra for shore excursions and tours while ashore.
