The roadside Glacial display of soft drinks
Cooling is so much associated with the soft drinks that they are very often referred to as “cold drinks”. Taste of the carbonated drinks improves through cooling. Conventionally the drinks are refrigerated but at times unconventional, environment friendly means and methods can be seen. One of these methods is the use of natural spring water as coolant. I observed this practice during a visit to Kalam.
An even more interesting practice is the use of Glacier to cool and display the cold drinks. Heading towards Babusar pass, through Kaghan, Naran, Julkund and Doodipat, such a display on a roadside was observed.
In Pakistan you may see snow in any seasons due to the existence of so many glaciers in the northern areas.
In the start of my career, I used Suzuki fx car, during the mid-career Suzuki Baleno and now I prefer and enjoy driving Suzuki Vitara. It’s a very friendly and reliable car and I have comfortable driving experience with it at temperatures falling below minus 4 c.
Near Doodipat, on the roadside, there was a Shelf carved in a glacier, with several compartments, each having many tins and bottles of soft drinks. An array of colourful containers looked very attractive, so much so that I made a mental note for its water colour painting whenever I could.
A very important but lesser-known fact is that the glaciers are mobile, at a very slow speed though. To keep the road clear of the glacier, The shelf has to be trimmed and maintained regularly.
