At least 261 people were killed and over 900 were injured in a horrific three-train collision in Odisha's Balasore on Saturday, making it the deadliest rail accident in India in over 20 years.
The crash involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train. The accident happened at 11:30 AM local time near the village of M Rampur.
The impact of the collision was so great that several carriages were lifted into the air and then smashed into each other. The wreckage was strewn over a wide area, and it took rescue workers several hours to free the trapped passengers.
Many of the victims were killed instantly, while others died from their injuries in hospital. The injured were taken to hospitals in Balasore, Cuttack, and Bhubaneswar.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but it is believed that human error may have been a factor. The tracks were clear of any obstructions, and the weather was good at the time of the collision.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and announced a compensation of ₹ 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹ 50,000 for the injured.
The accident has caused widespread disruption to train services in the region. Over 48 trains have been canceled, 39 diverted, and 10 have been short-terminated.
The Indian Railways has set up a helpline for passengers affected by the accident. The number is 0674-2530022.
The accident is a tragedy for the people of India. The government has pledged to provide all possible assistance to the victims and their families.
