Keeper Seth feeds the lace monitors!
It’s #ReptileAwarenessDay and we’re celebrating some lizards from down under!
Australia’s lace monitors are among the largest lizards in the world and one of the ways we care for them at the Zoo is ensuring that they’re fit and active.
In this video, ectotherm keeper Seth is feeding the monitors portioned pieces of sustainably sourced possum and encouraging these adept climbers to traverse across the ground and even up the trees!
As Seth explains, ectotherms are very efficient eaters and don’t need to consume their kai every day of the week. Next time you visit our Australia Bush Track see if you can spot the lace monitors (they may be camouflaged against a rock or in the trees!) and admire their unique lace-like patterns.
