Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey is one of the most divisive celebrities today. Some people will see whatever he stars in, while others will flee the theater if he appears in a trailer. He was formerly a regular in big-budget comedies, playing the lead in films like Dumb and Dumber, The Truman Show, Liar Liar, and others, but he has appeared in fewer and fewer films in recent years. One major issue with Carrey is that it is difficult to predict whether audiences will like or dislike him. The comedian's over-the-top antics are effective in some situations, but they can flop horribly in others. Carrey-starring films such as Dumb and Dumber, Liar Liar, and The Truman Show were box office triumphs in their day, but his more recent works have been less predictable. Before investing in a big-budget film, studios look for a bankable star, and Carrey no longer meets those criteria.
Rose Mcgowan
Rose McGowan has had a tumultuous relationship with Hollywood throughout her career, but she was already used to sticking it to the man by the time she made her film debut in the poorly received 1992 comedy Encino Man, having spent the first several years of her life traveling around Europe as part of a polygamous cult that blended free love with Christianity. While she had minor success in the 1990s, she is most known for her drug-fueled romance with controversial rock artist Marilyn Manson, and later for her role as Paige Matthews in Charmed from 2001 to 2006. However, she quickly dropped off the radar. On-set affairs have been known to ruin films in the past, as was the case with 2007's Planet Terror, Robert Rodriguez's brutal B-movie homage, when she had an affair with the director, prompting him to divorce his wife. McGowan saw a career comeback in 2007 with her appearance in Planet Terror, a double feature released alongside Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof under the name Grindhouse, which received excellent reviews. McGowan's performance as one-legged stripper Cherry was one of the project's highlights, but she claims it closed more doors than it opened.
