Facing removal onto a reservation in 1877, around 800 Nimíipuu (Nez Perce) people fight and flee west into the mountains. Led by Chief Joseph, Looking Glass, White Bird and Toohoolhoolzote, the bands fight US troops and trek for months across the changing American landscape–from Idaho through Yellowstone and toward Canada– in one of the great tragic sagas of our time. "An unpardonable crime" in the title is a quote from the NYT excerpt shared around 14:30 in the video.
