Jerry & Rebecca Rees and their two sons Ian and Wilder have the rare pleasure of sharing the same passion - they are all creative artists in the entertainment industry, telling stories and bringing characters to life.
Their “Rees’s Pieces” exhibit at CTN Studio in Burbank California is the first time the whole family’s artwork has been presented together.
While following the same muse they have nevertheless evolved very different styles.
Jerry’s path through Cal Arts and Rebecca’s path through Art Center led them to meet for the first time at Disney Feature Animation in the 1970’s, where they admired each other’s artistry and fell in love. Over the years they worked separately and together in turns – Jerry diving deeper into digital painting – Rebecca expanding her command of classic inks, paints and fine brushwork.
After creating “The Brave Little Toaster” together, Jerry and Rebecca decided it was time to create children together. Their two sons Ian and Wilder were born 5 years apart and filled the Rees home with even more imagination.
Jerry and Rebecca determined not to influence their boys’ career choices as they grew, wishing for them the same creative freedom as their own.
Both boys found their callings – Ian and his cherry-red Stratocaster guitar rocketing headlong into the world of musical composition – Wilder on a trajectory into immersive computing suddenly veering into classic graphite-on-paper wizardry.
Ian is now a music composer for countless films. Wilder is now a character designer for the animated series “Rick and Morty”. Jerry is now building on his experience as an Executive R&D Imagineer with 22 Disney Theme Park attractions under his belt to pursue next gen immersion. Rebecca is now a fine artist.
Looking back, Jerry’s luthier father Harold Rees, who was actively carving symphonic instruments until his 102nd year, was both an inspiration and a genetic influence for Rees family artistry. You will see several of his handcrafted instruments on display.
