Cindy Blackman Santana fell in love with the drums at a pool party when she was seven-year-old Cindy Blackman. Then she fell in love with jazz, and studied drumming at the Hartt School of Music and Berklee College of Music, before dropping out to join the Drifters as her first professional gig. She moved to New York City, where her education in drums really flourished, as she studied alongside the greats, like Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Max Roach, and more. She also says she’s even had visitations from beyond with some of these musicians. Then in the early 1990s she switched gears to rock ‘n’ roll, and began to play drums with Lenny Kravitz, a gig that lasted for 17 years. After that, she began playing with Carlos Santana, and as she says, the chemistry was there onstage and off. They got married the next year, and Cindy Blackman became Cindy Blackman Santana.
