From his London studio, David convinces as a man of the land.
Hockney loves contradiction and paradox**. He is walking the tightrope between careful planning and a rigorous routine on the one hand, and the flexibility to keep himself open to the instant and momentary, the now. Over those years of filming him I developed a similar mantra, stay in the present, and prepare for the unexpected. Only one of these pretty pictures of the East Yorkshire Wolds made it into the final documentary (two of them are sites he’s painted).
JP is his French painting assistant Jean-Pierre Goncalves de Lima, John is his house-keeper and companion John Fitzherbert.
** At the height of the Labour Government’s anti-smoking campaign he had badges made with the slogan “End Bossiness Now”
Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, A Bigger Picture captures Britain’s most beloved painter at work. David Hockney’s return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood – outside, in all weathers, through the seasons – culminates in the largest picture ever made outdoors. It’s an inspiring story of a painter in creative dialogue with nature and photography, and a revealing portrait of Britain’s most popular and celebrated artist.
“This wonderful film … will be of lasting importance for future generations who want to understand Hockney’s art.” Saturday Review, BBC Radio 4
