"We should do whatever we need to do in whichever way to get to the right design solution as quickly as possible....We don't need to have the absolute perfect model to illustrate a strong design concept." This is a snapshot of my talk from last October at the annual Blender Conference in Amsterdam, where I talk about how I use Blender for architectural design, and how it has become a must-have tool to explore design concepts quickly and efficiently.
As a result of a more procedural way of working, I feel super confident approaching familiar and less familiar typologies for architectural design because I know how to design fast and efficiently, whilst highlighting the process to potential clients and getting to a design solution that all parties are highly satisfied with. It doesn't matter whether I am looking at a house, an office space, a residential building, or a cultural centre. The process is the same.
As I mention continuously, there are no shortcuts when it comes to architectural design - rigorous explorations are required. However, being able to move faster through possible architectural ideas, understanding what it means design-wise allows the designer to get to most correct solution faster.
The project in the video is in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, for creating an urban park and an event destination. I was responsible as a project designer while at a HOK, almost 5 years ago.
One of my passions is to show more architects and designers that we indeed have a choice when it comes to the tools of our trade without paying exorbitant software rental fees to be able to explore and illustrate our design concepts.
