What's So Special About the France Crossfield Bomb? | Rugby Analysis | GDD Coaching
The cross-field bomb has become a common tool in the attacking tool-kit and presents an alternative strategy to both the box kick and the kick for territory off 10. In this video I provide an analysis for a Matthieu Jalibert bomb that see's France regain possession against Argentina.
As hopefully you'll pick up from the video, the main roles are intentionally similar to the box kick. The key difference is that the ball is now being kicked across the field into the 15m channel rather than originating in the channel as per the box kick. This strategy can be used as an 'on-the-fly' decision, perhaps a phase ahead of time, or can be planned for from set-piece. The example shown is a phase play bomb that has likely been called the moment that Argentina got the upper hand.
The risk with this kind of tactic comes almost exclusively from the chase. I'm sure you can think of examples of fantastic runs from full backs and wingers where they light up the field when counter-attacking. Well, simply put, this is the fault of the defence as much as it is the brilliance of the attacker to find the opportunity. Hopefully this video gives you a picture of how this tactic can be used in your own environment.
