Directive Counselling is counsellor centered approach; the counsellor directs the client to take steps to resolve his conflicts.
Directive Counselling is based on assumption that the client cannot solve his problem for lack of information.
In Directive Counselling approach, the counsellor plays an important role; he tries to direct the thinking of counselee by informing, explaining, interpreting & advising.
Directive Counselling gives more importance to intellectual aspect than emotional aspects.

CHARACTERISTICS OF DIRECTIVE COUNSELLING - - -
1- Counsellor play a major role in this process

3- Counsellor talks most of the times
4- The problem & not the individual is the focus
5- The function of the counselee is to cooperate with counsellor in the whole process
6- He works under counsellor not with him
7- Directive counselling gives more importance to intellictual rather than to to emotional aspects of individuals personalities

STEPS OF DIRECTIVE COUNSELLING - - - -
Williamson has given six steps of directive counselling:
1- Analysis - It includes collection of information about the individuals which can be collected through structured interviews, psychological case histroy method, interaction with family members, friends etc
2- Synthesis - After collection of data the information is organised in a logical manner to analyse the individual in terms of his qualifications, assets, potentials, liabilities, adjustments, cultural backgrounds, habits etc.
3- Diagnosis - The diagnosis consist of interpretation of the data in relation to the nature of his problem & causes
4- Prognosis - Under this step the prediction is made about the future development of the problem.
5- Counselling - The counselling here is to bring about adjustment & re-adjustment to the individual in relation to his problem. Attitudes & interest of the individual are considered during the counselling. It emphasis to develop life cycle where an effort in the +ive direction could lead to the success & success in term to lead to further efforts & motivation
6- Follow-up - The last step in directive counselling is follow up which is extremely important. An individual may be able to solve immediate problems through counselling but new problem may occur or the original problems may reoccur. Follow up with the clients is necessary. The role of counsellor is important & he has to make the individual to understand & accpet his strength & also his weakness & faults.

MERITS OF DIRECTIVE COUNSELLING - - - -
1- It is less time consuming ; hence this method can be adopted when an early solution is required.
2- This method is best ; less matured & less intelligent client interacts within experienced counsellor
3- This is best at lower level where the cilent is not in a position to analyse his own problem
4- It lays more emphasis on intellictual rather than emotional aspects of an individual personality

DEMERITS OF DIRECTIVE COUNSELLUING - - - -
1- In directive counsellling the client never becomes independent of the counsellor. So it is not an effective guidance
2- It will not help the individual to develop any attitude through his own experiences
3- The counsellor fails in saving the client to commit mistake in future
