Following the rigged 2020 presidential election, Belarus faced unprecedented levels of violence and repression.
Peaceful citizens were detained on the streets, brutally beaten and imprisoned without trial. Cells were overcrowded five to seven times over: rooms designed for 6 people held 35 to 40 people. These atrocities continue to this day. Every day there are searches and arrests in Belarus.
The human rights organization “Legal Initiative” carried out an experiment to make anyone feel at least a part of the experiences of Belarusians who disagree with Lukashenko's dictatorial regime:
Volunteers from different countries were placed in a cell of the former Soviet KGB prison in Vilnius. Everything here has been preserved in pristine condition and well reflects the conditions of imprisonment in the current prisons of Belarus.
After the experiment, we invited the participants to share their impressions for our project.
The goal of the experiment: to remind the world once again about the human rights situation in Belarus. Right now, about 1500 people are recognized as political prisoners in the country. They are unjustly imprisoned and systematically tortured.
