As instruments become more powerful, we are able to gather larger and more complex datasets.
This has recently facilitated an assortment of surveys of evolved stars with various objectives. I
will describing the Nearby Evolved Stars Survey, which is studying a sample of 850 evolved stars
within 3 kpc of the Sun, with the ultimate goal of measuring dust and gas return to the Solar
Neighbourhood. I will present our recent progress towards our objectives in terms of observations
and data analysis. If time permits, I will highlight some ongoing challenges and the prospects
for solving them with machine learning.
