Wand literally translates into MEASURING ROD. Thoth and Hermes were the gods of Weights and Measures, as well as the knowledge we now generally refer to as the hard sciences.

Morality & Mythology of Weights & Measure from Ancient to Modern Era
Weights and measures are fundamental to our modern world. Foundations stones to our economy however the ancients also understood the importance of weight and measure to a stable society. Passing this down to us in a literal sense as well as through a less tangible sense, stories of morality as well through symbolism that even extends into the heavens. Hidden in plain the references to weights and measures have even entered our vernacular. On the level, square house, square deal, plumb etc describe honest dealings.
