Building on the work of Picasso, Braque and the Italian Futurists, Fernand Léger found his own radical balance between figuration and abstraction. Painted in 1914, ‘Nature Morte’ belong to Léger’s celebrated series of abstract compositions titled ‘Contraste de Formes’. These works composed of bold outlines, overlapping shapes and strong colour tones were Léger’s response to the call for a new art in the modern age. Unseen since 1983 and appearing for the first time ever at auction, this important and influential work comes from an outstanding family collection of the European avant-garde and is a highlight of our upcoming ‘Rembrandt to Richter’ Evening Sale (28 July | London).
