The bridge spans over the Chesapeake Bay, connecting Maryland's Eastern Shore region with its Western Shore. It runs between Stevensville and Sandy Point State Park. The original span opened in 1952 and was 4 miles long.
Although it is commonly called the "Bay Bridge" it is actually the "William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge, named after former Maryland Governor William Preston Lane, Jr., who launched construction of the bridge in the late 1940s after decades of indecision.
