Lets create something in SketchUp that will eventually be cut out of a laser cutter. There is a process that I like to use that not only makes the process easy but makes it fun and rewarding. You need to think about material, scale, proportion, and detail. There are many ways to do this, but I like to create something in SketchUp, deconstruct it, export to AutoCAD, prepare it, cut it, and finally assemble it. My process is largely manual but there are many plugins to facilitate similar processes (like using TIG's awesome Slicer plugin for SketchUp). This was prepared for a class I teach at NDSU, but you don't need to be one of my students to bug me for clarification.
