What is Ashwagandha Good For?
Ashwagandha, otherwise known as withania somnifera, winter cherry or Indian ginseng is a powerful adaptogen studied for its ability to enhance the body's resilience to stress. Its long history of use in Indian Ayurvedic medicine as a Rasayana or Tonic, all the way up to present day, ashwagandha has been used to help insomnia, bolster the immune system, as well as to reduce stress. Some believe it also helps boost testosterone, slow the physical effects of aging and so much more.
How Does Ashwagandha Work?
There are about 40 withanolides, 12 alkaloids, and a few sitoindosides which have been isolated from ashwagandha. But if I were to guess, I would say the big player here and the one that steals the limelight, is the withanolides.
What is ksm-66® ashwagandha? Ashwagandha for Testosterone
This form has the most published research behind it, with most studies using 300 mg twice daily. I think up to date there are about 11 double-blind, placebo-controlled studies that have been conducted on KSM-66. “The company, Ixoreal Biomed who made ksm-66, has spent fourteen years of research on ashwagandha and has used that time to focus on the root of the herb. The root is traditionally the core of the supplement. KSM-66 is designed to have around 5% withanolides by mass and uses a milk extraction process that requires pre-treating the roots with milk. For this reason, it does contain milk constituents just FYI. Overall, this version of ashwagandha, because of its lower percentage of withanolides, is considered to be more UP-LIFTING.
What is Sensoril Ashwagandha? Ashwagandha for Sleep
Sensoril was created by the company Natreon, whove been studying various herbal remedies like ashwagandha, for over 20 years. And Instead of using just the root of the plant, like KSM-66, sensoril uses the root and the leaves. So you get both. The root and the leaves have different profiles, with different concentrations of different bioactive compounds. And because of that, youre getting a 10% concentration of withanolides compared to 5% with KSM-66. But here is the catch, instead of a ton of different biological compounds, sensoril for the most part has 3. The withanolide glycosides, oligosacharrides, and the most active one being withaferin A. Another big difference is in the dosing. KSM-66 has a lower concentration of withanolides, meaning you need a higher dose of the supplement to get a therapeutic effect. Sensoril is more highly concentrated with the 3 compounds I mentioned, which is why you find doses as low as 125 mg. So overall, this is the one that is used if you want that CALMING effect.
What is Shoden Ashwagandha? Ashwagandha for Anxiety
The biggest thing that makes this one stand out as unique, is the fact that it is standardized to 35% Withanolide glycoside. They use a multistep solvent extraction process which is a patent they have applied for, with The extraction solvents being just water and ethanol. They say this offers them high bioavailability and bioactivity. Being at 35%, this will be the strongest one you will find. So expect the effects to be a lot more heightened and with that said, the calming effects as well.
Now in terms of which one is better. Ultimately, deciding between KSM-66, Sensoril, or Shoden will depend on what you’re hoping to achieve. Everyone will have different preferences, so its best to go with one that most closely aligns with your supplement goals.
But with that said, always talk to your doctor first before trying out supplements like ashwagandha to see if youre the right candidate for them. And remember, this is one of those cases where you have to be the judge and weigh the pros and cons against your own goals, health history, and personal food philosophy. Ashwagandha is not for everyone.
