The War of the Portuguese Succession was fought from 1580 to 1583 between the two main claimants to the Portuguese throne: António, Prior of Crato, and Philip II of Spain, who eventually succeeded in claiming the crown, reigning as Philip I of Portugal.

After the Battle of Alcácer Quibir in 1578, Henry, Cardinal and great-uncle of Sebastian I, sought the throne but died without appointing a successor. The throne was contested by Ranuccio Farnese, Catherine of Portugal, Philip II, António of Portugal, and Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy. Philip II eventually claimed the crown. Spanish forces led by the Duke of Alba invaded Portugal, defeating António's army in the battle of Alcântara.

António fled to France in 1581 and attempted to rule from Terceira in the Azores but was defeated at sea by a Spanish fleet in July 1582 in the Battles of Ponta Delgada, ending his bid for power. Philip I was crowned in 1581, solidifying Spanish rule over Portugal until 1640.
