"I'm just getting started as a web designer and need to practice creating websites to build experience, and also to have sites for my portfolio. What are your thoughts on creating websites for friends/contacts for free? I worry that friends/clients might not take things seriously enough or commit the time and attention needed to the project if it's free. But if I charge, how do I convince people to pay me when I have no examples of my work, other than my personal website?"
