The G90 is the flagship car for Genesis, the S-Class of Korea and out of the gate I’m going to go on record to say it’s absolutely gorgeous. A couple of things new about the exterior design.
First the front fascia gets a new Crest Grille and the two-line headlamp and taillight design that extends across the entire brand. It also gets lower and wider when it comes to stance.
The rear end has been simplified, to with reverse lights and license plate being lowered to give it a more minimal appearance. It’s smooth looking. Genesis describes their design aesthetic as less is more. Best way I can describe the G90? Architectural. Athletic. Sexy. It looks expensive. I think I’ve just described a perfect date. Oh, and no one does wheels like Genesis.
Once you get inside this is a tale of two cars. The first chapter starts up here in the driver’s seat.
Two engine options are available. The base 3.5-liter twin turbo or that same 3.5-liter turbo with a supercharger. Acceleration on the new 3.5-liter twin turbo engine. Is this the boosted one with the 48-volt mild hybrid system that operates as a supercharger.
This is a supercharger that fuels the performance at the low end of the power band, mitigating turbo lag and gives you more power off the line.Do I miss the old standard V8. I’m not going to lie, yes, a little.
That electronic supercharger doesn’t really make up for it, but I won’t miss it at the fuel pump I wouldn’t. Where it really makes the most difference is with how insanely unnoticeable the idle stop and go is. This is the best around. Period.
The G90 gets a new suspension system for a smoother ride that recognizes the conditions of a road using a camera and making adjustments before going over potholes. The higher trim gets a multi chamber air suspension that lowers at higher speeds or raises up on rougher roads to reduce damage and cut down on road vibrations. This car is so comfortable to drive if you’re used to something a bit rougher it might lull you to sleep. It’s luxurious without being floaty or feeling sloppy.
When it comes to interacting with the tech up here the G90 is sublime. I got a digital key from Genesis through my phone and was able to use that to open the door. I don’t have to take the phone out of my purse or pocket and it automatically loads all of my personal settings to a driver profile. If my phone battery dies the sensor still works and will always open your car. And there’s a valet mode or a key card if someone else is parking for you. The interior makes you never want to leave.
Every material and finish on the interior just oozes luxury. No, luxurious things don’t ooze they exude. The attention to detail with all Genesis products feels deliberate and so noticeable. Less is so much more here. Take this wood interior, this is both wood and recycled newspaper and designers use metal inlay with a Sanggam crafting technique. It’s subtle but distinctly Korean. Like I said, attention to detail.
Laminated glass and an active noise control system that tailors the amount of sound cancelling according to which seat you’re in promises to make it super quiet in here. If you don’t use the digital key on your phone, the G90 still uses smart key access that deploys the flush door handles and an easy-close door system that closes the door for you.
There’s a 10.2-inch rear touchscreen, I can watch old episodes of Miami Vice and controls in the armrest that allow passengers to control the HVAC system and other functions in the cabin.
I can also sterilize my phone or other stuff in this anti-viral cubby in the console. The G90 gets a Bang and Olufsen audio system with more than 20 speakers surrounds you in sound. As well as a feature called the Virtual Venue, which recreates the ambiance of say the Boston Symphony Hall.
Pricing for the two trims are as follows: (3.5T AWD G90 ~ $88,400/3.5T E-SC ~ $98,700. $1,095 destination fee.)
So, which spot is better? Up there? Back here? I mean, it’s hard to say. But if you’re in a position to buy a full-size luxury sedan try out both spots. In whichever seat you sit, the G90 will not disappoint.
