In a previous video I discussed the phenomenon of pluripotent stem cells. These are stem cells that have undergone gene transfer through a viral vector, meaning a virus has been used to implant a gene directly in a cell. The end result is, for example, taking an adult skin cell and by using genes from an embryo, transforming the adult cell into a cell with embryonic stem cell characteristics. Japanese researchers led by Hidetatsu Outani have recently gone a step further and transformed adult skin cells directly into cartilage cells bypassing the pluripotent stage. Amazing!
